I photographed these beautiful berries at Gore Cemetery on 18 April. After checking online I believe the tree is Sorbus hupehensis or Chinese rowan. Gore is in Southland, New Zealand. Exploring Colour 
This is a lovely rowan! I planted a pink-berried tree (Sorbus vilmorinii) in our previous garden and would love another here. (We have an ordinary red-berried one here but it’s not happy in the heat & drought of summer.) Birds do like the berries, but they don’t go as quickly here as some of the other things.

If the berries are edible, I imagine these trees are very popular with the birds.

I have a feeling I read somewhere that after a few frosts the berries are edible for the birds. Oh, and I also remember reading somewhere that birds have colour preferences so they go the bright rowan berries first like the species that are red or orange, and then paler colours with white last!
