Gorgeous Gladioli

This beauty is a welcome surprise that I found by the front door a couple of days ago. Photos by Nigel, taken today. (I was holding/steadying the stem!) Click on either photo to enlarge. Text by Liz, photos by Nigel; Exploring Colour (2020)

Small Keepsakes

After cleaning the stained glass lightshade I dealt with the mantelpiece I've been ignoring for ages! What a great opportunity to share with you some of the things that are special to us 🙂 At home in our Tapanui cottage. New Zealand. This metal poppy art is above the fireplace. We bought it just before... Continue Reading →

Bright and Beautiful

The light in our passage at home died a couple of nights ago. I decided to take down the stained glass lightshade yesterday and give it a clean and got a new light bulb. What a stunning difference! I guess it was already fairly dusty when we moved in because we've never seen the colours... Continue Reading →

Beautiful Manuka

This lovely manuka or teatree was flowering in the native area at Dunedin Botanic Garden on Christmas Day 2019. I took these about 3.30pm. Dunedin, New Zealand. This particular manuka is Leptospermum scoparium 'Wiri Amy'. The 'Wiri' signifies that this plant originated from the Leptospermum breeding programme at the Auckland Regional Botanic Gardens, Manurewa. Click... Continue Reading →

Daisy Flowers

I took these daisy photos at the Dunedin Botanic Garden on 24 Dec 2019. Dunedin, New Zealand. Click on any photo to enlarge. Erigeron flowers from one of the colour beds. Following photos were all taken in the herb garden, one of our favourite places. Text and photos by Liz; Exploring Colour (2020)

Loco Lines

Train travel often isn't an option in New Zealand but it's a treat when we get the opportunity. I've already done several posts about our Taieri Gorge Railway trip on 29 Dec 2019 from Dunedin to Middlemarch (return). Here's some photos that I took of the train itself while at Middlemarch Railway Station. Middlemarch, Dunedin,... Continue Reading →

Stop For Sedum

We were heading away from Tapanui one misty morning and given it's now mid-summer this was unusual. We hadn't gone far, Crookston for those who know the area, when I spotted a blob of very bright yellow at gutter level on the corner of a building - which made me ask Nigel to stop and... Turquoise Cafe

This cafe popped up out-of-the-blue! We were en route to Roxburgh yesterday when I saw a flash of blue out my side window and the word 'cafe'. This is Ettrick orchard country and I hadn't seen anything bright blue before. I asked Nigel to turn around and sure enough there's a new cafe (only been... Continue Reading →

Teach Us To See

“Always continue walking a lot and loving nature, for that’s the real way to learn to understand art better and better. Painters understand nature and love it, and teach us to see.” -- Vincent Van Gogh Great post from Mike Powell on 15 Jan. He shared how a beautiful winter photo he'd taken of a male... Welcome Everybody

I've shared with you the tui mural photos that we took on Christmas Day but we also enjoyed a wonderful visit to a Catholic church in South Dunedin named St Patrick's Basilica - it felt very special to be there. For the record I know very little about Catholicism but the church felt very welcoming.... Continue Reading →

Bright Red Gate

We both loved this wonderful gate (see below), found while taking a look at St Patrick's Basilica in South Dunedin, New Zealand. The church itself is a fantastic building but our photos of that will have to wait for another post. Photo taken by Nigel, 25 Dec 2019. Also, I recommend watching this interview with...
