We saw an occasional native Carmichaelia when we drove up the side road at Roxburgh on 21 November 2020. Nigel got out of the car and photographed this one, and bonus … it’s in flower! He thinks it’s Cromwell Broom or Carmichaelia compacta. [I posted a landscape view from the same road recently – Knobby Range Road.]

That’s the Clutha River in the background.

It’s good to see another of your natives. I learned from your linked article that “Many of these eastern South Island species have very limited natural ranges, and a considerable number of them are threatened within the wild.” Too bad about the threats.

When I posted this I thought of you Steve and hoped you’d enjoy seeing it. So much is threatened sadly, many plants have a limited range but we take delight in what we find 🙂

That’s a pretty little flower that might surprise one just based on a distant view of the plant. The title made me think of this which, of course, has nothing to do with your post. 🙂

Thanks for the link Steve .. I did also think of that song when I typed out the title but didn’t go looking for the video. It was nice to have a look. Cheers!

What tiny delicate flowers! The purple markings are lovely and I like the way that an older flower (near centre) has turned an inky blue. (I enjoy seeing colours change as flowers age.)

Some Carmichaelias have lovely fragrance as well (one is actually named Carmichaelia odorata).

Sweeping colour!
There was a huge number of insects (moths, bugs, small wasps and flies) that fled when I got there. Be a very useful garden plant.
