Daring Daffodil

This continues my previous post Hint Of Spring. I mentioned then that I'd spotted a mature daffodil flower and asked Nigel to photograph it. The flower was down low among old grass stems so it took some effort on his part to get the shots. Photos taken 05 August by Nigel. Tapanui, West Otago, New... Continue Reading →

Hint of Spring

A couple of days ago Nigel and I walked up the road together on a sunny, relatively warm winter afternoon and I was delighted to spot emerging daffodils. I didn't have a camera but asked Nigel to get some shots. Soon after seeing the bud I also saw a mature flower but we'll stay with... Continue Reading →

Bananas

There's various species of bananas and I found a lovely one on 25 June in the Winter Garden Glasshouse at Dunedin Botanic Garden, New Zealand. It was in the Tropical House which is also where I saw the Spanish Moss and the Aristolochia gigantea. I visited again the next day with Nigel. The attraction with... Continue Reading →

Like Big Hankies

Behind the Spanish Moss in the bottom photo of yesterday's post was a climbing plant growing as a tangle of sturdy stems around a white pillar. I was pretty interested in them and took a couple of photos, then found a label nearby and realised it's the stems of a plant that has amazing flowers... Continue Reading →

Hello Yellow

Yellow's bright and cheerful. I welcome it, especially now we're in the grey days of winter in New Zealand. I decided it's time to put together another YELLOW post and this one is super-loaded ...enjoy! You can't miss yellow, even if there's only a little bit 🙂 This time I've sourced majorly from Twitter so... Continue Reading →

Brightening a Dull Day

We arrived in Dunedin on Thurs 25 June to attend Kay's book launch and Nigel was getting car things attended to during the day so I was free to wander. It was a grey drizzly day, not pleasant. I left the motel to get some food but got distracted. First by the winter house in... Continue Reading →

Pearly Gates

We found this attractive and fragrant shrub in the Dunedin Botanic Gardens when we were wandering around some paths at dusk. The plant is Osmanthus 'Pearly Gates'. I asked Nigel to take the first photo for me, composed so the 'Pearly Gates' flowers are set against the pearly sky. Dunedin, New Zealand 26 June. Click... Continue Reading →

Joy at Midnight

In New Zealand we move down to Covid-19 alert level one from midnight tonight. Essentially this means life returns to normal within New Zealand. Obviously border controls / quarantine will remain. We now have no active cases and it's 17 days since the last new case was reported in NZ. Awesome news!!! Two paragraphs this... Continue Reading →

Gold

When still in Level 4 lockdown we encountered a number of eye-catching plants on one of our walks from home, they all had gold. Whether lots of gold or just hints, they captured our attention and interest. Tapanui, West Otago, New Zealand. Taken by Nigel 24 April 2020 I feel heart-sick at the sufferings of... Hummingbird Day

This post is about the lead-up to finding the Ennis House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, in Los Angeles (in 2010). We don't remember much of that day but from the photo-dates it appears we found our way there the same day we visited Hollyhock House. We remember spending time in Los Feliz and loving...
