Christmas Mistletoe

I've still got a few photos of the native mistletoe that are perched on trees at our local public reserve at Black Gully. Happily they flower in December and a few of them reside at the edge of the big open grass area so no big hike is needed to access them. I took these... Continue Reading →

Lift Up Your Heads

Today is Christmas Day in New Zealand. We walked a track new to us, Gabriel's Gully near Lawrence, South Otago. Love these new fern fronds that grow upright but also bow their heads, reminding me of a church song: Lift up your heads to the coming king, bow before him and adore him, sing… Detail... Christmas Eve

Some photos I've taken this week, selected because I associate them with Christmas in some way. First two taken this morning at Gore Gardens.. white bell flowers and tiny pink blurs of Heuchera flowers. Then Cotinus or smokebush partly catching the light. And then (taken 22 Dec) native mistletoe, and astelia berries, Black Gully near... Continue Reading →

Take A Bough

They have a leisurely life.. these post people at Lake Roxburgh village, Central Otago, New Zealand. Interesting use of a street tree! 03 Mar 2022.

Every dog has his day

So they say.. and this one was having a 'reindeer' day. From my 2021 files, these photos were taken 24 December. The cute dog was running around with similarly 'dressed' canine companions near Millers Flat, and I took the rural landscape pics the same afternoon as we returned home via Moa Flat. New Zealand. ~... Continue Reading →

Christmas Lily

Fossicking among old photos I found this lily pic from 24 Dec 2019, taken with my old and basic cellphone in Dunedin Botanic Garden. I still love the flower! A search online reveals this flower has a variety of common names but in New Zealand it's known as the Christmas lily. Lilium regale. Other names... Continue Reading →

Merry Mistletoe

Native mistletoe. Black Gully Reserve, Tapanui, West Otago. 26 Dec. Fantastic colour [brightness/contrast adjustment only, no saturation] New Zealand.

Sitting Pretty

Wonderful Monkey Puzzle Tree in Tapanui endowed by nature at this time of year with 'baubles', on a private property not far from us and near their boundary fence. The 4th pic is my last photo of a Tapanui property lit up for Christmas. All these photos were taken Christmas Day/Night. West Otago, New Zealand.... Continue Reading →

Frondly Ghosts

Crown ferns and new growth, looking a little ghostly Christmas morning, sunshine yet to filter through. Black Gully Reserve, Tapanui, West Otago. New Zealand.

White Christmas

I found myself with a few local 'white' Christmas photos after a wander around town. These were all taken on Boxing Day except for the white ducks and the pigeons - I took those on Christmas Day. Tapanui, West Otago, New Zealand.

Deer House

During a local walk on Christmas Day we noticed this deer in a front yard done up with lights, and I took a daylight photo. In the evening we returned and photographed the lovely display. The property is a standard small-town house and yard yet the occupants have made it super special by night! Tapanui,... Continue Reading →
