Island Visit

As we explored the beach on Christmas morning, we wandered further and further along the sand until we came to a solid little island with the tide partially reaching around it when waves came in. These are the last of the beach photos from Christmas morning. South coast beach near Brighton, Dunedin, New Zealand. Click... Continue Reading →

Beach Christmas

Christmas Day morning we got up fairly early and headed out to a south coast beach - south of Brighton near Dunedin, New Zealand. It was a beautiful morning to be at the beach, and we were there before many others had arrived (they were arriving as we left). Native plants and exotic grasses at... Continue Reading →

Brighton Beach

This beach is on the south coast, not far south of Dunedin. There's a settlement at Brighton, a dairy, and a motor camp by the river. These photos were taken on our Wedding Anniversary 07 December. I included one photo from this beach in that post (our shadows on the sand). New Zealand. Click on... Continue Reading →

Breath of Fresh Air

Photos taken today as I stood on the edge of the southern end of the South Island looking out over the ocean. Instead of taking the motorway out of Dunedin we drove the coast route for a way, before heading for home. We went to Dunedin for my birthday (31 October), spent the weekend there.... To be or Not to be

That is the question when you're driving along the highway, comfortably cocooned in the car. It's easy to go with the flow, enjoy the view from the window and not stop to experience what's on offer outside. Yesterday we'd just passed Waldronville as we left Dunedin via Brighton Road. And as we crossed a bridge... Continue Reading →

Caught In The Middle

Petrified wood at Curio Bay, The Catlins, Southland, New Zealand. These three photos are of one particular log, taken by Nigel when we visited the Petrified Forest on 11 November 2019. He's also captured some seaweed / marine plant life in the photos. This preserved Jurassic forest site is amazing to explore! Click on photo... Continue Reading →

Southern Limit

As far south as we can go in the South Island of New Zealand - Slope Point, The Catlins, Southland. To get there you drive country roads till you reach the carpark. Then it's a reasonable distance walking over farmland (and carefully avoiding the animal manure) before you reach the Slope Point signpost and small... Continue Reading →

Fresh Sea Air

This stunning, beautiful beach is near Dunedin, out on Otago Peninsula. You can't drive right to the beach, you have to walk quite a way from the carpark. As you'll see though, it's well worth the trek. Huge sand dunes and lots of big open space. Sandfly Bay, Otago Peninsula, New Zealand. Photos taken by... Continue Reading →

South of Brighton (New Zealand)

This afternoon we drove home from Dunedin via the south coast, rejoining the main highway at Waihola. Along the stretch between Brighton and Taieri Mouth I found a little pull-over area where we could park and enjoy the view. The beach stretches out for a long distance broken occasionally by a rocky reef. The sand... Continue Reading →
