Sunset Surprise

This evening I glanced out the window and saw the outdoors bathed in a warm glow. I rushed to our west-facing bedroom window - the sky was alight! I grabbed my camera, shoved my gumboots on, and ran outside. Gorgeous winter sunset! Tapanui, West Otago, New Zealand Winter Sunset in Tapanui Click on any photo... Continue Reading →

Maheno Sunset

Today we drove to Oamaru, stopping en route at Balclutha (work-related stop for Nigel), refreshment break at Roslyn in Dunedin - a place where we can sit in a cafe and enjoy an awesome city / harbour view, and then on to Oamaru. Beautiful weather for a winter day and as we drove from Dunedin... Continue Reading →

Pearly Gates

We found this attractive and fragrant shrub in the Dunedin Botanic Gardens when we were wandering around some paths at dusk. The plant is Osmanthus 'Pearly Gates'. I asked Nigel to take the first photo for me, composed so the 'Pearly Gates' flowers are set against the pearly sky. Dunedin, New Zealand 26 June. Click... Continue Reading →

Perserves

We went for this lovely little local drive on the evening of 28 May, the real reason being so Nigel could show me some nice autumn trees that he'd seen while driving to a job. On our way back we thought we'd like to check out this farm roadside stall - we hadn't been able... Continue Reading →

A contemplation of colour. This morning on Twitter I found a wonderful poem about sunset colours - this particular sunset happened to be in Bristol, UK. In the poem the sunset colours are matched with sources they could have been derived from here on earth. Let's look at some natural colour sources before enjoying the... Continue Reading →

Winter Warmth

Returning to Tapanui from Balclutha we encountered a pretty rural sunset scene as we drove through Conical Hill in the Pomahaka area. I asked Nigel to turn around because I'd spotted an irresistable view that included a stream and an old bailey bridge. We both hopped out in the drizzle to take photos and Nigel's... Survivors: Poem

I've been working on this poem since Nigel came home with the beautiful sunset photos he took at St Clair in Dunedin. The St Clair's piles date back to 1921 and are remnants of a double-row of posts that with the addition of planks formed a groyne to retain sand. Apparently southerly seas took sand...
