Oamaru, Views

Oamaru's a town on the east coast of the South Island with a very distinct character, proudly on display in the commercial whitestone buildings of the old 'Victorian Precinct' CBD area, originating from the 1860s to 1880s and mainly comprised of large old grain and seed warehouses along with ludicrously grandiose bank buildings with imposing... View from Braids Hill

On 25 March we were heading home from Dunedin and I asked Nigel to pull in to an easily missed carpark at the bottom of this hill, then we walked up a way to a Beach Access walkway that I've seen many times before when we drove up the hill. It looks very inviting because... Continue Reading →

Eroaded

Erosion of the Foreshore Road at Colac Bay, attributed to climate change, means the road is closed once you get past the houses. The Southland District Council stopped maintaining that stretch of road. Some residents are angry about the Council response to the erosion problem. We visited Colac Bay on 09 January and I was... Taieri Mouth

When we drive home via the south coast route from Dunedin we drive through Taieri Mouth before heading back inland. This is a small fishing town and it's also very scenic. We had some food with us and stopped for a short break in our journey, 20 May 2021. Click on any photo to enlarge.... Continue Reading →

Here's the beach where we found the island ~as per yesterday's post. Lovely long white sand beach, waves, wildlife (an oystercatcher) and a beach island! Ocean View, Dunedin, New Zealand. Click on any photo to enlarge. From the carpark, on my way down to the beach with Nigel waiting. View to the left after getting... Continue Reading →

Island Beach

Found this beautiful island on a beautiful beach. Today we took the coast route home from Dunedin, and we've passed this beach access before. I thought it looked very inviting but it's one of those entrances that's hard to spot in time and next thing you've already whizzed past. Today we decided to turn around... Continue Reading →

Anemones

Thinking about anemones, which to me back in the day, were always the funny little things that you find in rock pools at the beach. These strange oddities have a ring of tentacles and if you feed them, as we used to do, with a morsel extracted from a 'cats eye' rock snail, the tentacles... Continue Reading →

Estuary at Fortrose

Toetoes Estuary at Fortrose. Our photos were taken from the coastal clifftop. Fortrose is in the far south of The Catlins, Southland, New Zealand. The location is way down south, on the south coast of the South Island. From the clifftop you can see where the estuary opens out to the ocean - clearly seen... Continue Reading →

Estuary Oystercatchers

When we were at Fortrose on 21 February 2021 the tide was low and oystercatchers were busy feeding on the exposed flats and in the shallows. The Catlins, Southland, New Zealand.

Oh The Ocean!

Ocean views from the clifftop at Fortrose in The Catlins, Southland, New Zealand. Photos taken on 21 February 2021.
