Island Visit

As we explored the beach on Christmas morning, we wandered further and further along the sand until we came to a solid little island with the tide partially reaching around it when waves came in. These are the last of the beach photos from Christmas morning. South coast beach near Brighton, Dunedin, New Zealand. Click... Continue Reading →

Beach Christmas

Christmas Day morning we got up fairly early and headed out to a south coast beach - south of Brighton near Dunedin, New Zealand. It was a beautiful morning to be at the beach, and we were there before many others had arrived (they were arriving as we left). Native plants and exotic grasses at... Continue Reading →

Gill’s Cnr Shelter

Beautiful bus shelter on the Otago Peninsula (end of the peninsula, on the route to Taiaroa Head where the Royal Albatross Centre is located). We visited the Centre on October 10, 2020 and this shelter caught my eye, featuring a Northern Royal Albatross on the front and one end, the other end has a yellow-eyed... Continue Reading →

Well Mannered Gull

Jean Mackay shares her delightful observations of nature via exquisite journal pages at Drawn In. Her subject material is generally local to where she lives in New York State but elsewhere when... Yellow-eyed Penguins (NZ endemic)

The yellow-eyed penguin or hoiho is endemic to New Zealand and much effort is put into trying to look after and protect those that are left - their conservation status is Threatened - Nationally Endangered which means they are facing high risk of extinction in the short term. One bright winter's day in Dunedin we... Continue Reading →

Spotted Shags (Cormorants)

Spotted shags and a single gull, found by Nigel yesterday when he visited the Kaka Point area in The Catlins. Looking at the photos last night, neither of us knew the identity of this shag but I'm confident from my online research that these are Spotted Shags. This is on the south coast of the... Flying in Dunedin NZ

In the Dunedin public library I noticed these birds on a corner of the blue carpet. Dunedin is a harbourside city so I assume they’re seabirds.. what a nice acknowledgement of the local environment!
