Look into the Bush

When we visited Dunsdale Reserve yesterday there were many ferns and mosses along the way, edging the path, edging the stream, and growing as ground cover on the forest floor. Very pretty, even on a dull day. Hokonui Forest, Southland, New Zealand. ~ photos by me, except for the last lovely pic taken by Nigel... Continue Reading →

Back Country Visit

Drove 6km off Glencoe Highway through farmland and forest to Dunsdale Reserve. "A forestry road provides access to this attractive remnant of native forest, characterised by matai and kahikatea." We then walked part of the one hour return walking track into Hokonui Forest. ~05 Jan 2022. Southland, New Zealand This was an off-the-cuff exploration. I... Continue Reading →

Wild Bright Blooms

These photos of beloved Central Otago wildflowers were taken on my birthday trip on 31 October (spring in New Zealand). We'd stopped on the roadside near Cromwell to take a closer look at them. The bridge in the 2nd pic provides access to the town of Cromwell, and the route carries on to the Queenstown... Continue Reading →

Green Seen

Took these photos at our local Black Gully Reserve on 23 May 2021, green things were looking very pretty that day. The last photo is of rocks in the path that I took a fancy to .. because I think they look like butterfly wings! Tapanui, West Otago, New Zealand. FYI, we don't escape American... Continue Reading →

Eroaded

Erosion of the Foreshore Road at Colac Bay, attributed to climate change, means the road is closed once you get past the houses. The Southland District Council stopped maintaining that stretch of road. Some residents are angry about the Council response to the erosion problem. We visited Colac Bay on 09 January and I was... Oxalis purpurea

When I was wandering through the amazing rock garden in Dunedin Botanic Garden on 20 May 2021, these captured my attention. Oxalis purpurea (exotic). New Zealand. Click on any photo to enlarge. Sutton Salt Lake

Nigel visited this salt lake on 27 May 2021, I wasn't with him. The lake had no water. He told me he took the photo from the eastern shore of the lake with the view toward the west. This is on the eastern side of the Rock and Pillar Range and a little south of... Continue Reading →

Misty Rock

Love how the low cloud softened the look of this big rock and I asked Nigel to take a photo. This was close by the side of the road as we drove from Moonlight to Middlemarch. Waitaki/Dunedin. New Zealand. Sat 29 May 2021. Click on either photo to enlarge. These large grass clumps will be... Continue Reading →

Moonlight Pond

My last post featured Butter and Egg Rd in the Moonlight sub-district of Waitaki, a little south of Macraes. We couldn't resist driving up the gravel road to the end where we came to Nenthorn Road and turned right, immediately encountering this wonderful farm pond complete with black swan couple and a flock of paradise... Butter and Egg Rd

After leaving Macraes, we drove along Macraes Road toward Middlemarch and along the way we passed this side road. I glanced at the sign and realised we'd found an old friend .. Butter and Egg Road. Nigel had photographed this same spot when we were in the area in 2009! 🙂 Click on either photo... Continue Reading →

Macraes

After leaving Stanleys Hotel at Macraes we headed out of the village in the direction of Middlemarch, the next leg of our homeward journey. The weather had worsened and it was steady light rain. Nigel leaned out of the car to get these photos for me as I was entranced by the old cart parked... Continue Reading →
