Downriver

The main river that's near to us is the Pomahaka River and recently I realised I wasn't too familiar with its course so one afternoon I suggested we drive downriver from our nearest contact point with the Pomahaka. West Otago and Clydevale, Clutha District, New Zealand. I took these photos 19 Feb 2021. Click on... Continue Reading →

Brighton Beach

This beach is on the south coast, not far south of Dunedin. There's a settlement at Brighton, a dairy, and a motor camp by the river. These photos were taken on our Wedding Anniversary 07 December. I included one photo from this beach in that post (our shadows on the sand). New Zealand. Click on... Continue Reading →

Roxburgh Dam

We turned off the main highway because I wanted to drive over the Roxburgh Dam. My photo's taken from the boat ramp after crossing. Central Otago, New Zealand. 16 Aug.

Paradise on Pond

Paradise Ducks on the farm pond that I featured in my last post. These are more properly described as Paradise Shelducks (Tadorna variegata). They're exceedingly noisy birds, you can hear them in this recording. The male and female make different sounds, most often in unison! Endemic. Photos taken by Liz, 16 August 2020. Central Otago,... Just A Farm Pond

Saw this beautiful farm pond as we were returning from Fruitlands and heading to Roxburgh, in Central Otago, New Zealand. We both took photos. There was also a resident pair of Paradise Shelducks (I'll share photos of them in another post). You can clearly see the female's white head in the first photo, and the... Continue Reading →

Devils Bridge Wetland

I haven't quite finished Oamaru... although I've shared all my photos there's a lovely set taken by Nigel to share with y'all! On the Friday afternoon, 24 July, there came a time when Nigel finished his appointments and I suggested we go for a drive into the country - a random drive with no prior... Continue Reading →

New Zealand Collie

Iconic in New Zealand, a remarkable animal indispensable to sheep farmers for moving and control of sheep, and familiar to the rest of us from seeing dog trials at A&P Shows and on TV. The breed was originally from the Scottish Border, the border collie, but has been bred over time to better suit the... Continue Reading →

Waikaia River in Winter

Soon after we left the town of Waikaia on Saturday 13 June, I suggested to Nigel that we turn down a side road that headed straight toward the Waikaia River. It gave us access to the riverside and I took these photos with my cellphone. It's now winter here in New Zealand. Waikaia is in... Continue Reading →

Country Road

After stopping at the apple tree featured in my last two posts we carried on down the road and the seal gave way to gravel (dirt really - there wasn't much gravel). Nice landscape. Soon we reluctantly decided it was time to turn around and head for home. Nigel turned into a gateway and we... Continue Reading →

Country Bridges

These photos were taken by Nigel when he was returning from Balclutha on Thursday 28 May. There's a current road bridge and an old no-longer-used railway bridge. The location is called Conical Hill and it's a very pleasant drive. Photos taken by Nigel I took this tight crop out of another photo. Text by Liz,... Continue Reading →
