Commissioner Conifers

The last of my photos from Commissioners Track at East Roxburgh, Central Otago. I was surprised by the variety of conifer species that we came across while walking the track, it was like an informal pinetum. I used to be totally disinterested in pine trees, put off by the vast numbers of plantation Pinus radiata... Continue Reading →

Cones and Stones

Cones and stones, and other wild nature. We're in winter here and yet we found a bird nest on the path with a small white egg still intact. Commissioners Track, East Roxburgh, Central Otago. 06 Aug 2022. New Zealand.

Pretty Pine

We saw this pine tree with nice foliage and lovely cones alongside the Commissioners Track that we walked yesterday at Roxburgh East, Central Otago. There's a few different conifer species that've been planted in the vicinity and it was interesting to see them; there were more conifer species at the top-end of the track as... Continue Reading →

Conical

Mostly cones and conifers, and some extras.. berries.. and handsome poplar trees. These beauties all caught my eye when we explored the semi 'wild' public park at Lake Roxburgh village - it was a joy to wander around! We discovered and explored the park on 03 March 2022, early autumn in Central Otago, New Zealand.... Continue Reading →

Red | Blue | Green

Roaming streets in the Central Otago town of Ranfurly on a beautiful autumn day was a pleasure and I had my camera ready to hand. I was filling in time while Nigel was busy out-of-town on a client site visit. There were plenty of interesting fruits and berries, and eye-catching colours. This is the same... Continue Reading →

Crying Cones

"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." We're suffering a pile-on of problems at the moment - in New Zealand and in the world. The old ways of thinking aren't going to cut it anymore! I've read/heard several Americans recently, talking about the pandemic 'waning' in their... Continue Reading →

Monkey Puzzle Tree

This fabulous monkey puzzle tree or Chilean Pine is just a couple of streets away from us on a private property and looks so eye-catching in autumn. It's in the Araucaria genus and I assume it's Araucaria araucana ~this link goes to info at Oregon State University if you're interested. I took the photos on... Continue Reading →

It was a real pleasure for me on Wed 6 Dec to accompany Nigel on a trip to Balclutha to visit the new subdivision named Plantation Heights with which he's involved through his company Growplan. Nigel is a Landscape Architect, based in Dunedin and actively working through Otago and Southland, and further afield by arrangement.... Continue Reading →

Monkey Puzzle at Invermay

I've shared one photo of this monkey puzzle tree with you already, and now I'd like to devote a post just to this one tree. Its the best specimen that I've yet come across and I was pretty excited to find it! Taken at Invermay Agricultural Research Centre, Dunedin, New Zealand on Sun 26 Nov... Continue Reading →

Scenic Tour of Invermay (Dunedin, NZ)

Invermay is an agricultural research centre on the rural edge of Dunedin, near Mosgiel. Nigel and I were there on Sunday 26 Nov 2017 because I was hoping to see a research collection of Cordyline australis (the NZ 'cabbage tree') that they have on site somewhere. I didn't spot where they are but we were... Continue Reading →

Cedars of Lebanon Grove

Yesterday we visited the Dunedin Botanic Garden and paused at the Cedars of Lebanon Grove. This is a special garden, gifted by the Lebanese community. The Grove was officially opened in late October 2011. Click on photo to enlarge. The Dunedin Botanic Garden website states that "the cast bronze Cedar Cone acknowledges the close relationship...
