Seafaring Butterfly

This unusual photo of a butterfly flying over water captured my imagination. As soon as I saw it on Sunday evening I felt compelled to write a poem so this wannabe poet swung into action, spending two or three hours labouring over the words to express my feelings about the scene. Eastern Tiger Swallowtail flying... Continue Reading →

Common Tussock Butterfly

At Moa Flat we also saw an occasional butterfly. Nigel managed to get a photo of a butterfly with its wings open and I got a smaller photo of the underside of a butterfly's wing. After looking online it seems our butterfly is probably a Common Tussock aka Tussock Ringlet. Scientific name is Argyrophenga antipodum.... Continue Reading →

And I didn't want to do my own post today because all I want to do is say "Hey, why don't you go and see these wonderful butterflies?" I'll guarantee that they'll brighten up your day! Sunset Silhouette... Continue Reading →

Monarch meets Queen

The monarch butterfly is well-known in New Zealand but until recently I was unaware of another butterfly that looks very similar, albeit not resident in NZ. While browsing a blog that was new to me I came across Queen and Monarch by Steven Kessel (Tucson, Arizona, USA). He has kindly permitted me to use his... Continue Reading →

Perfect Match

Perfect matches in nature. These are mostly photos that have caught my eye because of colour matching but this first photo is about shape and pattern. This moth with its natural camo colours could be a mascot for the Air Force! Big thank you to the photographers who have kindly allowed me to use their... Continue Reading →
