Little Red Tree

This evening I wandered up our street till I got near the edge of town at Hancox Park where there's a little red tree I'm trying to keep an eye on. I've seen it go fiery red in a previous autumn so I'm keeping watch as its foliage changes colour. Tapanui, West Otago, New Zealand.... Continue Reading →

Very Pretty Turkey

We were nearing the end of our visit to Maple Glen Garden on Easter Sunday when I spotted the prettiest turkey I've ever seen and wandered over to take photos. There were two turkeys on the grass by a little woodland and a few chooks and guinea fowl within the woodland. The turkeys tolerated my... Continue Reading →

Autumn Easter

I put this on twitter today to remind northerners that in the southern hemisphere Easter is in autumn! Taken at Maple Glen Garden on Easter Sunday, 04 April. Southland, New Zealand.

Life and Death

Good Friday commemorates the suffering and death of Jesus Christ at the crucifixion. Easter in the southern hemisphere falls in autumn so the seasonal context is way different to that of northerners. I've kept these pics of red fall foliage for today (taken locally on Monday, 29 March 2021). Tapanui, West Otago, New Zealand. It's... Continue Reading →

Trooping the Colour

We're nearly at the end of the first month of autumn in New Zealand. This troop of red hot pokers are by a highway near home and I don't see them very often. From a walk yesterday when we braved the traffic. Easter in the southern hemisphere where things are dying rather than rising! Tapanui,... Continue Reading →

Blurring The Boundary

Bright yellow flowers break through the boundary of this property in Tapanui that has a silver fence facing the footpath. We often walk by here. The first photo was taken at a very bright time of day earlier in March and when the plant was at its best. The second and third photos were taken... Continue Reading →

Beaut Bloom

Gorgeous flower I photographed with my cellphone in the tropical collection of the Winter Garden glasshouse, Dunedin Botanic Garden last year, 25 June 2020 (winter in New Zealand). My main photo is the second one but the first gives context and makes a better header image. Click on either image to enlarge. Extraordinary flower, worth... Continue Reading →

Early Autumn

These photos were taken on 05 March 2021 when Nigel and I were wandering around the lower level in the Dunedin Botanic Garden. There were still lovely roses to be seen and although most garden plants are now past their best it's always interesting to see them at their mature stages too. I didn't have... Continue Reading →

Yellow Mystery

I noticed and liked this yellow-flowered plant at Gore Gardens on 25 February 2021. The flowers seem like Allium flowers but the ovary bulges didn't match with pictures of Allium flavum that I looked at - so I don't know what these are. Any ideas? Gore, Southland, New Zealand. Photo taken by Nigel. Text by... Continue Reading →

Purple Berries

Found these beautiful purple berries at Dunedin Botanic Garden, New Zealand on 05 March 2021 but at present we've no idea what the plants are. Just looking at them, we both guessed they might be an Australian species. Photos by Nigel.

White Echinacea

We really like to see Echinacea flowers (coneflowers) and these were in Gore Gardens, Southland, New Zealand on 14 Feb 2021. Coneflowers are from North America.
