I used to have one of these outside my back patio door. I love the bright yellow flowers. Sadly it was getting out of control, and I had to make room for some decking and it was too big to move.Those leaves can be pretty prickly, but the wonderful flowers make up for them.
Mahonia do very well down south here, all the public gardens have them. I did a post called ‘Berry Unexpected’ last year that shows a particularly good display of berries from another Mahonia in the Dunedin Botanic Garden – you might enjoy seeing them: https://exploringcolour.wordpress.com/2020/09/06/berry-unexpected/

That’s a great mahonia – I like the way it holds its flowers and those leaves are impressively long.

We have them in Canada – Mahonia aquifolium – but never like that!
