When I wandered up the road to the outskirts of town on 29 March, I found the sheep in with the colchicum (autumn crocus). It was a really perfect autumn morning. Tapanui, West Otago, New Zealand.

The field is also lovely further to the right, which is closer to the house.

The sheep make for an interesting juxtaposition.

Few sheep get such a nice field. Lots of trees, firewood piles, flowers and plenty of grass. All the shelter and beauty an animal could want!

Those sheep know a comfy bed when they see it. Who wouldn’t like flowery bedding like that? 🙂

Are both the purple and white flowers crocuses? I didn’t realize they grew so tall. I always think of crocus as a ground-hugger, but of course these could be a different species. I can’t remember ever seeing a crocus in real life, so I’m certainly not knowledgeable.

The crocuses we see in spring are small and bright. These are giant in comparison! These push up foliage much earlier in the season and then the foliage goes away, but in autumn the flowers pop up all on their own – seemingly out of nowhere! Colchicum are amazing. And yes, they come in white as well as shades of purple.
