Christmas Day morning we got up fairly early and headed out to a south coast beach – south of Brighton near Dunedin, New Zealand. It was a beautiful morning to be at the beach, and we were there before many others had arrived (they were arriving as we left).
Native plants and exotic grasses at the top of a steep sand bank. The white-flowered plant is a type of Hebe (Veronica species as they’re now known).
Gulls enjoying a tidal pool. They soon had to vacate though …
A ‘found’ dried Christmas decoration. Kelp high and dry on the beach.
Pretty shell at home on the sandy beach.

A walk on the beach sounds and looks so delightful, Liz. We have been down around the freezing level the past few days.

I watched this strange video on Twitter this morning of a woman in Siberia taking her ‘dry’ washing off the line and every item of clothing crackled as she unpegged it, and was as stiff as a board. As she took them down, she piled all the stiff items on top of each other .. and then picked the whole pile up in her arms and awkwardly maneuvered it through her door and into her home.. I’ve never seen anything like it! I hope you stay warm. You’ve still been managing to get some very fine photos 🙂

Thanks, Liz. When I was growing up, we used to hang our clothes out to dry on long clotheslines that ran from our porch to several tall trees with pulleys. We mostly hung the clothes on lines in the basement in the winter, but I do recall pulling sheets off the clotheslines that were mostly dry but were stiff from the cold, as though they were starched.

Interesting! Nigel grew up in Hampshire UK and he remembers cold winters in the 70s when his mum brought in sheets “stiff like plywood”.

That’s reassuring, Liz. I don’t feel so old now. 🙂

That looks wonderful – beaches are my favourite places (after gardens, you know me). And to get such a lovely one to yourselves is worth an early start. Your lovely photographs fill me with a feeling of well-being and hope. 🙂

What a nice start to a day…having a beach all to yourselves. It’s good so many sleep late. 🙂
