Merry NZ Christmas

These photos of New Zealand flora were all taken by me at Dunedin Botanic Garden on 09 Dec 2020, in the native plant collection. This is my Christmas blog-post, like a Christmas card. Thank you for visiting and to those who’ve been with me for longer – I value your return visits. To the regulars who take the time to stop and chat via the comments, thank you for your friendship.

    1. More pics of tree fern and koru going up later tonight (hopefully). Absolutely love it that we can just relax and enjoy the season in NZ .. just hoping the weather is kind now 🙂

    1. Thank you Wendy, I picked you as the person most likely to know them all! Yes, the lovely white flowers are our native linen flax or Linum monogynum. You must’ve already known the Geranium traversii or Chatham Island geranium, my ‘Shining star’. Do you have it in your garden?

      1. I used to have both the geranium and the flax but I don’t think our climate is ideal and they were short lived. I don’t do intensive care in the garden and lose some things over summer because I don’t water them and our free draining soil is very thirsty. I need to feed it more compost. 🙂

  1. I don’t know what the various plants are, but they’re certainly pretty! My grandparents and mother have both visited NZ, and I think it was the wonderful ferns that made the biggest impression on them. This makes a very nice holiday card, best wishes for the new year!

    1. And best wishes for a safe and happy Christmas and New Year to you Robert! My fern picture is our amazing black tree fern, mamaku or Cyathea medullaris and it’s our tallest tree fern. I’ve just found out it’s a symbol of new life and I didn’t actually know that when I posted the pic!

    1. Wishing you and Ted a blessed Christmas, and a very happy New Year. You must yearn for peace after all the turmoil in the US .. I hope things vastly improve for you in 2021. I really enjoy the chats we have via our respective blogs, thank you Ellen!

      1. Thank you, Liz, and you are so right about the turmoil–it takes an emotional toll along with all the other unmentionable stuff. I’m optimistic that the tides are about to shift 😀.
I enjoy them as well and look forward to what wonders we will both see in 2021!

  3. Your ‘baubles’ look somewhat like some of our daleas when they’re in bud. And the ‘white Christmas’ is lovely! Red and green may be the traditional seasonal colors, but I do love that white.

    1. Yes I get that resemblance! The ‘baubles’ are our Marlborough Rock Daisy or Pachystegia insignis. They open into robust white-petalled flowers with a big yellow centre. Very striking plant. The ‘white Christmas’ is our native linen flax or Linum monogynum, very pretty in the same way as the exotic blue flax flowers are. Wishing you a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year!
