During family reunions in Wisconsin when we were kids, I remember our girl cousins picking them and putting them upside-down in a pond or birdbath and watching them twirl around slowly like dancing ballerinas with full, poufy dresses. Thanks for the memory, Liz

Oh that’s a very fun memory! Where I grew up (Northland, NZ) I don’t recall any hollyhocks, I doubt they grow up there. So I didn’t know they can entertain in this way!
I’ve never tried growing them but we’d probably have more chance of success where we are now. It would be lovely to have our own! A bit difficult here finding somewhere sheltered from the wind.
Another beautiful bloom, Liz! I’m imagining a large group of them, mixed with that deep purple—quite nice.

Yes, I think there’s more pink and light-coloured ones around than the purple.

I love hollyhocks. They’re supposed to grow really well down here and in town the pavements are lined with them, but I don’t have much luck.

Maybe a wall of cornus and hollyhocks and sunflowers!

They wouldn’t flower at the same time though, not here anyway.

That’s ok by me, as long as they take their turns nicely 🙂

Ha ha! Much better to have flowering staggered. Otherwise the colours might clash 🙂

Interesting that these two hollyhock posts came at around the same time as your comment about having visited Hollyhock House in Los Angeles.

Spot on. It’s a build-up to a Hollyhock House post. Cheers!

I like this one even more than the deep purple. I always associate these, along with foxgloves and delphiniums, with English gardens.
