Loco Lines

Train travel often isn't an option in New Zealand but it's a treat when we get the opportunity. I've already done several posts about our Taieri Gorge Railway trip on 29 Dec 2019 from Dunedin to Middlemarch (return). Here's some photos that I took of the train itself while at Middlemarch Railway Station. Middlemarch, Dunedin,... Continue Reading →

Roses at Crookston

This is another building, standing beside the derelict garage at Crookston where Nigel took the photos of yellow sedum that were posted in Stop For Sedum. Front left and right of a big shed. Photos taken by Liz, 18 Jan 2020. Crookston, West Otago, New Zealand. I took this photo primarily for the attractive misty... Continue Reading →

Stop For Sedum

We were heading away from Tapanui one misty morning and given it's now mid-summer this was unusual. We hadn't gone far, Crookston for those who know the area, when I spotted a blob of very bright yellow at gutter level on the corner of a building - which made me ask Nigel to stop and... Straight Ahead to Leithen

There weren't many road signs to confirm our route to Leithen and it had us guessing at times as we drove up the gravel lane through forest trees, the sealed road having ended when farmland had transitioned to woodland. Eventually we came to the lovely Leithen picnic area that I've been posting photos of recently.... Continue Reading →

River Stones

The Pomahaka River at Leithen Picnic Area has plenty of stones in the riverbed, many of them flat. Nigel commented that many of them are square-ended and would be useful for corners in stonemasonry (known as quoins). We were there on Sunday afternoon. All photos below taken by Nigel, 19 Jan 2020. Pomahaka River at... Continue Reading →

Pomahaka River, Leithen

We did a little bit of local exploring yesterday afternoon. I remembered seeing a sign to a picnic area near Heriot so we drove there and found a turn-off (to 'Leithen Picnic Area'). Initially it was a sealed road through farmland, then became a gravel road through forest and suddenly we arrived at a lovely... Continue Reading →

These Hills of Gold

Driving back to Tapanui via Moa Flat yesterday we suddenly came upon these golden slopes, probably brassica flowers from a farm crop. Those are the Blue Mountains in the distance, behind Tapanui. West Otago, New Zealand. Nigel got a nice photo of the view so I've done a 1600px-wide image. Click on the photo to... Continue Reading →

Turquoise Cafe

This cafe popped up out-of-the-blue! We were en route to Roxburgh yesterday when I saw a flash of blue out my side window and the word 'cafe'. This is Ettrick orchard country and I hadn't seen anything bright blue before. I asked Nigel to turn around and sure enough there's a new cafe (only been... Continue Reading →
