Cartoon Surrealism

While wandering in Dunedin on Monday 21 May, I came across this mural when I looked into a carpark that’s opposite Taste Nature in High Street. From the signature I found that its a 2018 mural and from an Otago Daily Times article I found that it was done in February. The artist, Jacob Yikes, calls the style ‘Cartoon Surrealism’ and the ODT article has a video of him talking about his work. Jacob Yikes is based in Christchurch NZ and in the article he explains he has had a lot of work commissioned since the earthquake which has helped him work as a full-time artist.

The ODT article reports: “Yikes said that he put a personal spin on most of his paintings, using high impact colour and scale.”

Here are my photos and I’ve chosen to display them in order from the ‘tail’ end of the mural and working toward the more complex elements at the ‘signature’ end. I hope you enjoy them, I find them great fun! — Liz

    1. Yes exactly, its not the sort of work that you just take in at a single glance and there’s so many surprising little details! For that reason it rates very highly with me, along with the fun and fantasy aspects which I really appreciate and love ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. The mind of an artist mystifies me! They see what is invisible to me and then transform it to a work of art. I can not even begin to fathom the mind of Jacob Yikes, it must be filled to overflowing. His “Cartoon Surrealism” is an amazing piece filled with tiny details that intrigue me…like the wee ladder poking out of a hole in the water. The separate photos enable the complete perusal of the mural. Now, I’m off to explore the links. Thank-you!
