This magnolia tree had a very low-hanging branch with large flower heads on it. I took the opportunity to take some close-up shots with my cellphone camera. Usually the blooms would be up too high for me to do this. The petals were beautifully white and I thought the camera would probably get it wrong and I’d end up with dingy grey or over-exposed white. To my surprise they turned out almost as pure in their whiteness as they really were! Made me very happy 🙂
Taken on a beautifully fine afternoon at Dunedin Botanic Garden, New Zealand on Wed 4 October.

Lovely photos. In the UK it’s really hard to find a magnolia bloom that’s not been scarred by rain or cold – and when you do, it’s almost always too high up to take a decent photo!

I was really lucky with these because I spotted them in a darker, sheltered spot and the branch hung down really low. The flowers were in perfect condition and drop-dead gorgeous. Couldn’t believe my luck!

Beaytifully and finely done, Liz! I do love white, and can appreciate how difficult it can be to capture without blowing the detail.
