Thank you Dina. The kowhai is a particularly special NZ tree and varies a lot in size. Many years ago I remember a family member had one on their lawn and it was big enough to have a good sturdy swing hanging from a bough – it was a pretty big tree!
Kowhai is one of my favourite NZ natives. Such a beautiful tree, and great for attracting our nectar-feeding birds!

Yes it is. There’s different species and cultivars. Our native birds the tuis (songbirds and nectar-feeders) like feeding among the flowers.
