Magical World of Australian Fungi Photographed by Steve Axford

As a teenager in the sub-tropical Far North of New Zealand I used to wander around in my father’s bush block and find beautiful fungi. I fell in love with their beauty and would return with notebook and coloured pencils to try and record what I saw. I especially loved the “filmy” toadstools and the coral fungi.

By viewing this wonderful blog post from Flow Art Station I was introduced to the fungi photography of Steve Axford from the Northern Rivers area of NSW, Australia. He manages to capture the extreme beauty and variety of these fascinating subjects that are generally only visible for such a fleeting period.

I hope you enjoy this post as much as I did!

Magical World of Australian Fungi Photographed by Steve Axford

Australia-based photographer Steve Axford loves to travel to the remotest corners of the earth, capturing the lives of people, animals, and most importantly, fungi. His fascinating photographs of the diverse world of fungi seem to picture a fantastic expedition to some distant alien world. And it’s easy to understand why. Many of these rare mushroom species are unknown to us and have never been photographed before.
My photography has been my avenue into this world as it slows me down and allows me to look at things more closely,” says Axford. “I try to combine the beauty I see with some scientific accuracy, so most of my photos could be used to identify things and will show the fine detail.

    1. Yes, they are indeed magical – like the bright treasures under the sea but much more accessible! Their fleeting presence makes it seem even more magical when you actually manage to come across one in pristine condition – how exciting it always is! Thanks for dropping by again Pete as you so regularly do – its such an encouragement to me!
